Widow Support

We are providing essential care and support to vulnerable widows, ensuring they have food security, a safe place to live, and a sense of belonging.

Hope Through Practical Support

A female Indian pastor is giving an Indian widow a monthly donation and support check

The plight of widows in India, particularly elderly widows, is heartbreaking. Culturally they are ostracized and often either abandoned by their families or given very little support.  We assist both young and older widows who often have major health challenges, lack skills or education and face other limitations caring for themselves. Our first goal is to make sure that they have enough to eat and somewhere safe to live. Our second goal is to provide enough funding so they are able to tend to their health needs. Our third goal is to help those who are still able to work find a viable way to generate income. Many of the younger widows we support have had to give up their children for others to raise, due to their poverty. We would like to be able to reunite these mothers with their children as they regain the ability to care for them.

Statistics from 2023 show that over 50% of elderly widows in India are illiterate, further marginalizing them and limiting their ability to care for themselves.

Stories of Success

Miryamma's New Glasses.jpg

For several months, one of our widows was away, living with her grandson. I encouraged our ministry partner to put her usual monthly support into a "widows emergency fund" and use it in case something arose with one of the other widows. One day I received a message saying, "Miriyamma's eyes are not well. She needs a check-up with the doctor. Should we take her to the hospital with the reserve money we have in our trust?" I answered, "Yes, certainly." They initially thought she might need surgery for cataracts, but thankfully she only needed medicine and glasses! What may seem simple for us can be life-changing for someone in need.

With a generous donation from a U.S. optometrist, Hope Givers United was able to arrange payment for a necessary eye surgery for the widow Emelamma. She would have lost her eyesight without it but was able to retain her vision due to this donation.

Hope Givers United is proud to be able to provide monthly support to widows like Mary and Miriyamma in their journey towards a healthy and dignified future.
